Imposter Syndrome Is a Lie – How Women in Tech Can Overcome It

Our First Mini Carer Series from "The GrowGetter" Wohoo!

HELLO LEGENDS!

Welcome to the first Mini-Career Series from the Grow Getter, which is about tactical career/growth tips for women in tech who want to level up.

TLDR:
1️⃣ Manage personal imposter syndrome with an Evidence Log.
2️⃣ Win workplace discussions using 3 Weapons of Credibility.
3️⃣ Own your power as a generalist in the AI age

💗Do you feel like an Imposter?

Emma Grede (co-founder of Skims) does not have imposter syndrome.

She was raised with a simple belief:

"You’re not better than anyone else, and nobody is better than you."

But what if you don’t feel that way?

I’ve been the only woman in the room in interviews, meetings, and presentations.
And no matter how much I prepare, I still feel that creeping doubt.

“Am I good enough?”
What if I get called out?”

But here’s what I’ve learned: imposter syndrome isn’t real.
It’s just a mental trap we fall into.

And today, I’ll show you how to break free.

💗 Managing Personal Imposter Syndrome

🔹Problem: You doubt yourself, but thoughts ≠ reality.
🔹 Solution: An Evidence Log to challenge negative beliefs.

💡 New Framing: Your Brain is a Liar – Keep an Evidence Log

Imposter syndrome thrives on one big cognitive bias
Your brain focuses on what’s missing rather than what you’ve done well.

The fix? Create an Evidence Log.
Every time your brain tells you, "I don’t belong here", counter it with proof.

📝 Example:

  • ❌ "I don’t know how I got this job."

  • ✅ Evidence 1: My manager praised my analytical skills—proving I bring value.

  • ✅ Evidence 2: I built a dashboard that provided real customer insights.

  • ✅ Evidence 3: I’m actively learning and improving via a coding course

💛 Overcoming Workplace Imposter Syndrome

🔹 Problem: You feel unqualified when speaking up.
🔹 Solution: Use the 3 Weapons to boost credibility

💡 New Framing: "I Don't Know Enough" → Bring the Right Data

Weapon #1: Customer Conversations
🎤 "Here’s a real pain point a customer shared last week."
(Storytelling makes your point more memorable.)

Weapon #2 : Usage Data
📊 "We tested this feature, and retention went up 12%."
(Numbers turn opinions into facts.)

Weapon #3 : Competitor Research
🔍 "X company is doing Y, and here’s why it’s working."
(Position yourself as the expert on external trends.)

Actionable Step: Before your next meeting, pick 1 of the 3 Weapons to use.

🟡 3. Navigating Generalist Imposter Syndrome

🔹 Problem: You feel like you "know a little about everything but aren’t an expert."
🔹 Solution: Reframe generalists as valuable.

💡 New Framing: In the Age of AI agents, Generalists Are the Future – Own It

If you feel like you’re "not specialized enough"—congrats, you might be ahead of the curve.

💡 Lucy Warm (Founder of Fuzzy) defines generalists as:
"People with highly transferable skills—not bound to one industry, problem, or function."
